Small Grouping for Kriegsmarine U-boat U-68 with Cap Badge/ U-Boot Mützenabzeichen
The whole comprises:
- A small wooden box (14 x 9 cm)
- A Tradition Badge/ Cap Badge for U-68 (which came screwed onto the box). It measures 5 x 5cm
- A Junghans 'stossgeschützt' stopwatch / torpedo timer, missing a start/stop button and its clockwork seems jammed. It's back boasts a scratched text which reads: "U-68 KL 1939-1942". KL here should stand for Kapitanleutnant. If these items belonged to commander Karl-Friedrich Merten (15 August 1905 – 2 May 1993) then I can't explain for the year 1942, as he was promoted from KL to KK (Korvettenkapitän) in 1941 already. Otherwise the lot has no traceable features to identify its wartime owner.
- A Kriegsmarine Cap Tally.
- German Iron Cross Ribbon.
- 2 Kriegsmarine Buttons
(!) The box contained yet another cap badge, a photograph of it is attached but this item is sitting in my collection and is not for sale. As I basically merely collect the U-boat cap badges I decided to do away with the remainder of the grouping. For what it's worth, I sell this grouping with utmost confidence in its wartime period authenticity. That said, the box itself is presumbably a postwar container used to store the items. The aluminium identifier tag that says "U-68" also seems to contain the almost illegible word: Orden (see close up photograph), atleast that is what I can make of it and makes most sense in this regard.
